Bringing physical computing to forefront

The idea behind the physical computing takes us twenty years back computers. It has something to do with adopting this idea. It took two decades to gain momentum and today physical computing is a reality.This article was written based on the insights given by Jaison Leon, Co-Founder & CEO, QtPi Robotics.

In simple words, physical computing is enabling the otherwise non-responsive computers which obviously comprise of hardware and software to respond back to our physical world. They can respond back in many forms for example messages, voice assist or indications in form of alerts etc. This way we can infer that machines and devices are becoming more intelligent with complex machine learning and artificial intelligence infrastructure working behind the interface we are used to interacting with. Today we are used to haptic or otherwise touch-based interfaces on our phones and laptops. Tomorrow we may interact much like how Tony stark does it, using interactive holographic interaction.

The advantages it offers

As complex as it becomes in the background, the foreground could be as simple as drag and drop of your favorited product, a touch to your favorite music or piece of code into the window and processing happens. Well, there is history to this. Early adaptors of interactive physical computing kept it to themselves si that they could mint billion out of it. Perhaps many bigger corporations kept away from this idea.

“Companies such as Microsoft realized that closed walls on this idea are not working anymore and it’s about working together in a community. For this technology to thrive, logic is required and not pieces of code that were learned from textbooks. The reason being they should be able to solve real-life problems and using machines to their full potential. The realization that we needed to work together made an impact”, says Jaison Leon.

Enhancing speed of innovation

Companies today are making sure that they give the customers what they want. This is enhancing the speed of innovation as we speak. Internet of things was initially assumed to be proprietary tech which is not now. With electronics components, sensors etc. down to chips and microcontrollers are costing 1/5th of what they cost a decade ago, is making IoT based innovations cost effective. With open source, the fruits it bore is wonderful. This was physical computation becoming sophisticated but affordable.

Today, as we spoke of interactive programming, everything is now application program interface (API based). There are codes that appear like building blocks allowing anyone to drag and drop codes much like visual programming, and yes it works. “Coding is more visual now and our kids and youngsters are born into technology. Now it has become a natural instinct for them and there is a lot to learn from them. They are qualified to this system and realize that creative approach can solve real problems such as creating lighting systems in their homes while giving commands through their smartphones”, says Jaison Leo.

Enhancing current situation

SCADA systems where earlier examples in the real world where HMI was used to control factory machines. The ease of interaction is led to factory automation which improved the interactive aspect tremendously. in the Industrial IoT segment, this was an influencer.
The extension of this stride could be robotics. Sophisticated yet simple looking humanoid robots with connected to a neural network are present today. They have the capability to mimic and learn about its environment like a child. Thanks to interactive capabilities, they can sense the physical environment, convert them into a digital pattern, and give the feedback which is appropriately understood by us in the analog world. This proves that not years of experience to count but rather the ability to bring logic into action and it undoubtedly makes us creators.
